Thabo, the Space Dude: From Page to Stage

Seeing one of your stories come to life on stage is a dream for any author. I was absolutely thrilled when Jen Moorcroft, who runs a theatre company in KuGompo, expressed interest in adapting Thabo, the Space Dude into a live theatre production.

Following the success of her theatre company's stage adaptation of Fab Farm last year, it was decided to keep the momentum going with another of my children's books. From the very beginning, I knew Thabo, the Space Dude on stage was in wonderful hands.

Bringing Thabo, the Space Dude to Life on Stage

Jen secured the performance rights through Penguin Random House before holding auditions and beginning rehearsals. Throughout the process, I was grateful to be kept in the loop, hearing how auditions were going and how local schools were responding.

As opening day approached, the excitement continued to build. Then... it was showtime!

A Magical Day at the Guild Theatre

Walking into the Guild Theatre foyer, I immediately spotted a photo booth which had been set up. What a great idea!

Soon, the theatre filled with school groups arriving for the performance. Their excitement was contagious. For many of the children, it was their first time visiting a theatre, making the occasion even more special.

I took my seat in the front row, where a "Reserved" sign had been thoughtfully placed just for me. I smiled as I looked around at the impressive set, and couldn't wait for the adventure to begin.

A Performance That Captivated Every Audience Member

From the opening scene to the final curtain call, the show was an absolute joy to watch.

The cast brought incredible energy to the stage, keeping the audience completely engaged throughout. Of course, Thabo, played by Gabriel Schreiber, stole the show, bringing the character's humour and charm to life.

The imaginative set design, colourful costumes, creative props and dynamic lighting made the production sparkle. Each scene flowed smoothly into the next, and I loved how the young audience was encouraged to interact with the actors on stage.

I found myself laughing throughout the performance, and hearing the children's delighted reactions made the experience even more heartwarming.
